Suni was found by the roadside, dragging herself along on her front two legs after an axe attack to her spine had rendered her paralysed in the back half of her body. At GRI she received veterinary care in the hope that with intense nursing and support she might recover the full use of her back legs. Over time, Suni showed some signs of improvement, but after three years, the injuries had become more problematic due to her size. There was no hope left that Suni would recover and become a viable member of a herd of elephants. The decision to euthanise Suni has been the most difficult decision ever faced by the GRI-Elephant Orphanage Project, but her spirit lives on in everything that we do to combat wildlife crime and preserve this incredible species. Suni’s toy is one of the most popular elephants in the collection due to the poignancy of her story. It bears a boot showing the endeavours to save her, and a teal cross where she endured the blow from the axe.
