ZAMBIA PRIMATE PROJECT
In May 2023 Game Rangers International proudly incorporated this dedicated compassionate conservation project within its Wildlife Rescue Programme. The Zambia Primate Project (ZPP) and its mission align well with GRI, following a Rescue, Rehabilitate, Release strategy to ensure wildlife impacted by humans is given a second chance for life back in the wild.
ZPP’s mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and release back to the wild monkeys and baboons that are victims of the illegal wildlife trade in Zambia.
Since its inception, ZPP has successfully facilitated the release of over 810 primates back into the wild. The survival rate of the released primates currently averages between 85 and 100% at 12 months after release, making ZPP one of the most successful primate release projects in the world.
ZPP works to rescue primates that have been victims of immense cruelty at the hands of humans. To ensure lasting change, ZPP also works to educate and sensitise local communities in order to reduce the number of primates being taken from the wild. Through this project we hope to alleviate suffering, promote human-wildlife coexistence and give primates a second chance of life back in the wild where they belong.
tUSK AWARD FOR CONSERVATION
After witnessing a monkey being stoned by community members as a young boy, Cosmas Mumba dedicated his life to protecting and rescuing primates. Coming from a humble background, Cosmas didn’t finish school, nor has he received any formal training. But he is an exceptional primatologist and the most dedicated Project Manager who started ZPP in 2002.
